Ok, you’re not actually a dummy! No, you’re a stressed out bride trying to make 1001 decisions so you can have the perfect wedding. Bride Wars, Father of the Bride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Wedding Date…etc; these are just a few of the movies that, rather humorously, show what is sometimes the dark side leading up to your wedding. Take just a minute and think of all the decisions you’re making. Your cake adds another plethora of choices: Size, shape, color, decor, flavor, filling, topper…ok, take a deep breath. Let’s make this easier.
Choose your cake consultant wisely. A good consultant will never just sit there, staring blankly, waiting for you to tell them what you want. If you walk in with specific ideas, the consultant needs to listen very carefully, but on top of that, a good consultant will also ask questions, show pictures, suggest ideas, and ascertain your personality. However, choosing your cake actually begins BEFORE your consultation. Here’s what you can do.
The easiest way to begin is by getting online and looking at pictures. If you find a picture of something you love, or something that that has certain aspects you like, or even a picture of exactly what you DON’T want, print them out and bring them with you to your consult. This will give your consultant an idea of your style so they can find your perfect design.
There are also four pieces of information that, if at all possible, you will want to bring with you to the consultation:
1. NUMBER- Be sure to have an idea of how many people you are inviting and what you plan on serving, such as a meal, alcohol, hor d’oeuvres..etc.
2. VENUE- Knowing where your reception will be held is important. Certain cakes will almost disappear in certain settings. Your consultant will be able to help you choose the design that best compliments your venue choice.
3. COLORS- Bringing in an actual sample of your colors is very important.
4. THEME- Does your wedding have a specific theme? Is it traditional, modern, formal, rustic…etc? Knowing this will make a huge difference in cake selection.
What about the groom? How involved should he be in the wedding cake process? Let’s be honest, the wedding is all about the bride! It’s YOUR day! However, bringing the groom to a consult is still a good move. If he drags his feet, let him know that he gets to taste cake, what’s not to like! Many brides love getting their fiances opinion and, if you choose to have a grooms cake, it will get him just a little more involved. It can be that small piece of the wedding that’s all about the groom.
Choosing a cake shouldn’t make you want to take off like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride! Your consultant can lessen your stress so that when you leave you’ll feel the relief of having one less decision to make. When it comes to your cake, let us, just like in the movies, give you your very own happy ending!
